How to Write a Personal Money Order

If you don't have a bank account but need to write a check to pay a bill or make a purchase, money orders are a handy, low-cost option. You can purchase money orders at many grocery and convenience stores, as well as at any U.S. post office. If you decide you no longer need the money order, bring it along with your receipt to the business or post office where you purchased it. In most cases, you can obtain a refund, minus the service fee charged for issuing the money order.

Instructions

    • 1

Print your name in the space designated "From."

    • 2

Include your address if there is an area designated for this.

    • 3

Print your account number in the space labeled "Memo" or "Account number." If you are not paying a bill, note what you are using the money order for, such as "Loan" or "Gift to Valerie," for example.

    • 4

Print the payee's name in the area designated "Pay to the Order of" or "Pay to."

    • 5

Include the address of the recipient if there is an area designated for this.

    • 6

Sign your name on the signature line. Sometimes this line is labeled "Purchaser, Signer for Drawer."

    • 7

Fill out your name and address, along with a memo regarding your purchase, on your receipt. Tear the receipt along the perforated edge and save it for your records. You'll need your receipt to file a claim if your money order is lost or stolen.
