How Do I Make My 50Qt-15 Moped Go Faster?

How Do I Make My 50Qt-15 Moped Go Faster? thumbnail
You can increase the speed of your 50Qt-15 scooter by performing several mechanical alterations.

Your 50Qt-15 moped possesses several mechanical features that limit its speed, including an air intake case that limits the amount of air that can enter the engine during fuel combustion, pre-established sizes for its variator pulley wheels and a speed-restricting washer in the variator system. By performing basic maintenance procedures, such as regular tire pressure checks, and by altering these features, you can increase the speed of your moped.

Instructions

Ensure that your rear tire is filled to the proper psi (pounds per square inch) level indicated on the sidewall of the tire. Use a tire gauge to check the psi level and refill or leak the tire until it is filled to the proper level, typically around 30 psi cold.

    • 2

Drill or poke holes in the air intake case located above the scooter's variator case on the left side of the scooter. Use a drill or awl to place as many or few holes as you want on the side of the molded, non-rigid plastic case. This will increase the amount of air flow entering the engine during fuel combustion.

Install aftermarket pulley wheels by opening up the variator case. The lid of the case is held in place by six bolts you can unscrew with a socket wrench. Each pulley wheel is held in place by a bolt through its center point, each of which must be unscrewed with an air-powered impact wrench. Smaller pulley wheels allow for faster acceleration and uphill speed, while larger pulley wheels allow for faster straightaway cruising speed.

Remove the speed-restricting washer around the front pulley rod. Access the pulley rod using the same method you would employ to replace the pulley wheel itself. Once the front pulley wheel is detached, you can reach into the variator system and pluck the speed-restricting washer from the rod by hand or with a pair of pliers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the air intake case entirely if you live in a relatively dry climate as its only purpose is to prevent water from entering the intake. The case is attached to the variator with two bolts and to the underpart of the rear wheel well with a third bolt. The bolts can be removed using a socket wrench.
