How to Exhibit Coins

How to Exhibit Coins thumbnail
Rare coins shouldn't be exhibited loose in this manner if you want to maintain them in pristine condition.

To be maintained in perfect order, coins require protection from corrosive dust particles, oxidation and handling. At the same time, it's a shame to shut away what in many cases are miniature works of art. Luckily, as of 2010, a range of products are available that make exhibiting your coins practical as well as pleasurable. To display your collection effectively, follow any or all of the following steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your coins inside individual mylar-lined cardboard folders known as 2-by-2s, and then arrange a group of 2-by-2s in a fitted tray, which in turn can be displayed under a glass-topped coffee table or cabinet. As of 2010, 2-by-2s cost only a few cents each from online numismatic accessories stores, while special 16-inch by 10-inch trays retail for just under $20.

    • 2

Exhibit your most precious coins inside snap-lock holders made from nonreactive plastic. Retailing between $1 and $5 online, these can accommodate individual coins, pairs or whole runs and are available with colorfully themed backgrounds such as the US flag. Once again, arrange these within glass-topped pieces of furniture.

    • 3

Achieve a more expensive look for individual coins by placing them inside a "slab," another variety of snap-lock case with a fitted interior and space for labeling, available for just under $2 online. Why not prop up a slab on your desk with a small easel or support so that you can enjoy your latest purchase while you work?

    • 4

Hang small groups of coins on the wall inside special fitted and glazed frames, again available online. Alternatively, house your snap-lock cases in wall-hanging cabinets, retailing in the region of $80 from online display furniture stores.

    • 5

Draw attention to the very finest pieces in your collection by placing them inside individual glass domes with walnut bases -- these should cost you around $25 as of 2010.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refresh your collection on a regular basis by rearranging the pieces. If you own a large collection, you might consider having a revolving sample on display.

  • Exhibiting your coins in this way can draw the unwanted attention of burglars, so remember to lock your windows and don't leave your collection out on display while you're away on vacation.
