How to Add a Bungee Cord to a Kayak
Attaching a bungee cord to a kayak is often done by many paddlers as a means of securing a paddle. Dropping a paddle into fast moving water can quickly result in a potentially serious situation for a paddler who suddenly has no means of guiding the kayak. Attaching the paddle to the kayak with a bungee cord provides a means of securing the paddle and preventing it from falling into the water and being carried away.
Things You'll Need
- Three-foot length of bungee cord
- Nylon hook
- Plastic bead
- Spring-loaded cord keeper
- Lighter
Instructions

1
Cut a three- to four-foot length of bungee cord with a pair of scissors. Trim the cord to the desired length based on personal preference.
-
2
Feed one free end of the bungee cord through the loop on the end of a nylon snap. Secure the bungee cord to the snap with a double overhand knot.

-
3
Feed the opposite end of the bungee cord through a spring-loaded cord keeper. Push the spring release button on the keeper and feed the bungee through so eight to 10 inches of the bungee cord extends through the cord keeper.
-
4
Slide a small-diameter bead onto the short length of bungee cord extending through the cord keeper. Place the small bead on the cord to act as a stopper and prevent the cord from pulling through the cord keeper when a paddle is not attached.
-
5
Press the spring release on the cord keeper once again and feed the free end back through the hole in the cord keeper, forming a loop. Pull two to three inches of the bungee past the keeper. Tie a stopper knot to secure the cord and prevent it from pulling back through the cord keeper.
-
6
Snap the nylon hook onto a loop or line installed on the kayak to secure the bungee to the kayak. Snap the hook attached to the bungee in a location that will not interfere with paddling.
-
7
Attach the paddle to the leash by sliding the loop end of the leash over the paddle handle and down to the desired location. Tighten the leash around the paddle by pressing the spring release on the cord keeper and tightening the loop around the handle.
