How to Make a Rick Rack Leaf

Flowers and leaves can be made out of scraps from your craft basket. Rick rack comes in a wavy strip that can be bought on a roll. Rick rack is handy to use for flowers and leaves because the sides are ready to go---no hemming or stitching required. With a few simple twists and folds, your leaves and flowers are ready to decorate. Use the flowers and leaves to decorate clothing, bags or hair clips. They can be used on items you've made or to dress up a store-bought item.

Instructions

  1. Layered Leaves

    • 1

Cut a piece of green rick rack so it looks like a "W." This is roughly 1 inch long.

    • 2

Fold it in half so it looks like a "V" or "U." Trim off the very top points on the end. Don't cut off too much or it won't look right.

    • 3

Sew a few stitches along the bottom of the "V" on either side of the curved point. Do not close up the entire length, just around the curved point.

    • 4

Open the right side of the "V" and fold in the ends until they get to the middle of the "V." Make one stitch through the layers in the bottom of the "V" to hold the ends in place.

    • 5

Repeat the folding and stitching on the left side of the "V." Take one or two stitches in the bottom middle, again, just to hold it in place.

    • 6

Turn the leaf right-side out so the stitches are hidden inside. There should be several layers of leaf at this point.

    Easier Flowers

    • 7

Cut a piece of rick rack so you have a "V" shape. This will be very small, roughly 1/2 inch long.

    • 8

Fold the "V" in half, overlapping the sides of the "V" a little bit so they do not match up. They should be off by just a little bit so it looks like you have two little points.

    • 9

Make two or three stitches in the bottom of the "V" shape to hold it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Create several leaves for each flower to add a punch of color.

  • If you have larger flowers that need large leaves, simply make a loop of the green rick rack and sew the two ends underneath the flower.
