How to Name Your Own Price on Plane Tickets

  • Print this article

Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" campaign is a feature that lets you enter your desired price for airline tickets. Priceline will attempt to find tickets at that price. You can only use "Name Your Own Price" if you're flying round-trip. You can save up to 40 percent on tickets. The success of the feature depends on supply and demand; if there is not a lot of demand for tickets during the time of your trip, you're more likely to find tickets at your specified price.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit priceline.com. Click the "Flight" tab. Enter your departing and arrival cities. Select the departing date and return date and the number of passengers. Click "Search Now."

    • 2

Scroll down through the list of available flights and write down the average price for the flight. The average price doesn't have to be exact, just an about price. Click the "Priceline.com" link at the top of the page to go back to the main page.

    • 3

Click "Bid now" under "Name Your Own Price for Flights." Enter your flight information once again and click "Bid now."

    • 4

Choose your departure and arrival airports. Priceline highlights the airports that typically give you the best rate, but those airports can sometimes be up to 100 miles away from your destination.

    • 5

Enter a price that's 10 to 40 percent less than the average airfare for your flight in the "Name Your Own Price" text box. Start out with 40 percent; you can always go back and name your own price again if you cannot find anything for that cheap. 40 percent is the absolute maximum discount you can get; you will return no results if you enter anything more than 40 percent.

    • 6

Enter your passenger information, such as your name and birth date. Click "Next." Review your airfare details on the following page. Make sure your name, departing and arrival airports and your arrival and departing dates are correct. Note the total cost, as the total will be more than the amount you entered for "Name Your Own Price." This is due to taxes and fees.

Decide whether you want to purchase "Trip Protection," which reimburses you for cancellation in case of illness, death in the family, job loss or other unforeseen events. It also provides you with accident protection and reimburses you in case of baggage loss. As of December 2010, "Trip Protection" cost $16 a person.

    • 8

Enter your initials in the "Initial Here" text box. Enter your billing address and credit card information in the provided text boxes at the bottom of the page.

    • 9

Click "Buy My Tickets Now." Priceline will attempt to secure your tickets at the specified price. If no tickets are available for that amount, Priceline will notify you on the same page. You can go back and enter a new price and try again. If tickets are available, then Priceline will automatically charge your credit card and inform you the details of your trip, such as your time of departure.

Tips & Warnings

  • You cannot specify an exact time for your flight. If Priceline finds tickets at your desired price, your time of departure can be anywhere from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • All sales are final. Unless you purchased "Trip Protection" you cannot refund your ticket price. Even if you did purchase "Trip Protection," you must have a valid reason for your cancellation, such as death in the family or an illness.
