One of the problems that people who have DirecTV run into is that after their DirecTV dish and box are installed, they receive a new DirecTV remote control that is not preset to control their television. However, DirecTV remotes are universal remote controls, which means that you can program them to work with any TV.

Visit the DirecTV "Remote Control Code Lookup" page. (See Resources.)

Click your remote control model number to select it.

Type the brand name of the television with which you want to set the remote. Click "Search." A page that features a five-digit code at the top appears.

Set the "Mode Switch" on the remote to "TV."

Hold the "Mute" and "Select" buttons simultaneously until the LED on the remote blinks two times.

Enter the five-digit code, then press the "Power" button on the remote. If your TV turns off, you know the code worked.

Click "Find More Codes" if the code does not work. A list of more codes that are associated with your brand of TV will appear. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you find the code that works with your TV.
