Just as with any sedan, your Impala may have trouble starting on some occasions. If your Impala won't start check a few things prior to calling a mechanic to save time and money.

Step 1

Place your key in the ignition of the Impala and try to turn it. If the key does not turn at all or fully, check to be sure that the steering column is not locked as the wheels may be in the wrong position. Turn the steering wheel to the left and then to the right and wiggle the key. Once the steering column is in the correct position, you should be able to turn the key and potentially start the engine.

Step 2

Determine if there is enough fuel in the vehicle for the engine to start. If you are unsure how much fuel is in the car or you know that there is very little to none, add one gallon of fuel to the tank and try to start the car again. A low or empty fuel tank in a Chevy Impala can cause engine problems and prevent the engine from starting or running continuously.

Step 3

Check the battery by turning the key to the "accessories" position, the position in which the electronic parts of your Chevy Impala will work, even if the engine is not running. Turn on the interior lights or headlights and check to see if they light up. If they do not or they are very faint, there is likely a problem with the battery. The battery may need to be jump started, charged or replaced entirely.

Step 4

Check the fluids. Locate the lever that releases the hood and pull it. Walk to the front of the car and open the hood. Locate and check the transmission, oil and coolant levels. If they are not filled to the minimum fill line add the appropriate fluids and attempt to start the engine again. Without adequate amounts of these fluids, the Impala engine may be damaged or have difficulty starting.

Step 5

Listen for noises when you attempt to start the engine that may indicate a problem with the ignition switch, the starter, or the fueling system. When trying to start the engine if you hear no sound at all there may be a faulty ignition switch. If you hear clicking sounds there may be a faulty starter. If the engine does start briefly or intermittently, there may be a problem with the fuel line, pump, or filter.

Step 6

Contact a professional. If you are unable to determine the cause of your Chevy Impala not starting, it is time to call a professional. Have the vehicle towed to a garage or dealership that can do further diagnostic testing and repairs.
