How to Remove Glue From Plastic Surfaces

Removing glue from plastic isn't as sticky a situation as it might seem.

If you've recently purchased a plastic-based item with a glued-on tag, removing the glue residue can be tricky since some commonly used adhesives are not water-soluble. Be careful not to damage the surface of the item. Products have been developed to address this specific issue, but they aren't the only method to remove glue residue from plastic.

Things You'll Need

• Dishcloth
• Oil or peanut butter
• Soap
• Penny or other smooth-edged coin
• Oil-based solvent

Instructions

1. Gently scrape glue residue from the plastic item with a smooth-edged coin. This will not clean all of the residue, but it will reduce the amount that must be removed.

2. Apply oil or peanut butter to the remaining glue residue with your finger. Rub the area using the dishcloth until the remaining residue is removed. If that process isn't successful, reapply the oil or peanut butter, let it sit for an hour and rub it again.

3. Spot clean the area with soap and water, and dry with the dishcloth.

4. If the oil or peanut butter is ineffective, use the oil-based solvent according to package directions.

Tips & Warnings

• Mild friction alone can remove most, if not all, glue residue. If you don't have anything containing oil, rubbing the area with a dishcloth or baking soda can remove glue residue.

• If the item in question is valuable or delicate, consult a professional experienced in handling the item in question.

• Do not use solvents such as alcohol or acetone unless you are certain these will not damage the item.
