Instructions for the Skip-Bo Electronic Game

Skip-Bo is the Mattel-owned commercial version of the card game Spite and Malice. The 162-card deck consists of cards numbered one through 12 and 18 Skip-Bo -- or "wild" -- cards. Skip-Bo's display screen shows the number of players, building piles completed, stock piles, score, number of cards, draw pile, level, discard and player's hand piles. The screen also has sound, Skip-Bo, Skip-Bo Short, Shuffle and New Game options. The game begins on Demo Mode; exit Demo Mode by pushing reset or removing one battery, replacing it and restarting the game. Players win rounds by getting rid of their stock pile via moving cards to the building piles. At the end of each round, the winner receives 25 points and five points per card remaining in the other players' piles. Be the first to reach 500 points and you win the game.

Instructions

  1. How to Select and Move Cards

    • 1

Use the Scroll button to select the card -- from your hand, discard pile or stock pile -- that you want to play. The frame around the card selected will begin flashing.

    • 2

Press "Enter" to select the card.

    • 3

Move the flashing frame to the location where you would like to move the card. When the frame flashes on the new location, hit "Enter" to move the card.

    • 4

To deselect a card, press "Enter" when the frame is on the card.

    How to Play the Game

    • 5

Press the "New Game" button to start a new game. Cards are dealt into each player's stock pile -- 30 cards for the regular version and 10 for the short version of the game -- with all cards facing down except the top card, which is facing up. The remaining cards are dealt into the draw pile; at the beginning of the game each player is dealt five cards from the draw pile. At the end of a player's turn, she replenishes her hand with cards from the draw pile. When the draw pile runs out, cards from the building pile are shuffled and become the draw pile.

    • 6

Move one or more cards from your hand or stock pile to the building pile. Up to four building piles can be created; building piles are started with either a one or a Skip-Bo card. Building piles rise in number from one to 12. You may place a card that rises in number by one on any of the building card piles. Once a building pile has reached 12, it is removed from the game. Keep moving cards from your hand, discard pile or stock pile until you can no longer put a card down in consecutive order. At the end of each turn discard one card into one of four discard piles you are allowed to make.

    • 7

After a player has finished his turn, the next player's turn begins. The round continues until a player has gotten rid of all the cards in her stock pile.

    • 8

Reach 500 points and win the game.

    Selecting a Game

    • 9

      Press the "Menu" button.

    • 10

      Select "New Game."

    • 11

Use the scroll button, after the "New Game" symbol starts flashing, to toggle between Skip-Bo and Skip-Bo Short. Press "Enter" when the game you wish to play is flashing.

    • 12

Use the scroll button to toggle between Levels I, II and III. When the level you wish to play flashes, hit "Enter."

    • 13

Use the scroll button to toggle between the number of players -- two, three or four -- that you want to have in your game. Hit "Enter" when the number of players you want is flashing. When the musical note starts flashing, use the "Select" button to toggle between music on or off. Hit "Enter" to select the option you want. The musical note will appear to indicate the sound is on and will disappear to indicate the sound is turned off.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select the check symbol in the upper left hand corner of the screen to check the other players' discard and stock piles. Press "Enter" to return to your hand.

  • Use the cards in your stock pile first, if possible.

  • Discard your cards from highest to lowest in your discard piles.

  • Skip-Bo cards are wild. You can use them on any other cards. Try to use them when they will enable you to use many of your other cards.
