How to Register My Corporation Name in Florida

How to Register My Corporation Name in Florida thumbnail
Register your corporation name in Florida by filing articles of incorporation.

The name of a Florida corporation is registered with the state when articles of incorporation are filed. Filing articles of incorporation is the legal process for registering a business. Once your corporation is registered with the state, your name can't be used by another company.

Before you register your Florida corporation, the state recommends you check the availability of your name by visiting the Florida Department of State website. If your business name is already in use by another company, you can't register the business unless you change your corporation's name.

Instructions

    • 1

Check name availability. From the Florida Department of State website, click "Search our Records" and click "Inquire by Name." Enter the name of your corporation. If there is another company using the same name, a record will appear in the query results.

Complete the articles of incorporation cover letter. This is an attachment to your articles of incorporation and is required by the state of Florida for business registrations. You will designate your corporation's name on the cover letter.

    • 3

Complete your articles of incorporation. You can file online or print and mail the corporation forms. If you are forming a for-profit corporation, use the form titled "Profit Articles of Incorporation." If you are forming a non-profit corporation, use the form titled "Non-Profit Articles of Incorporation." Complete the articles.

Submit your articles of incorporation and pay the filing fees. If you are mailing your documents, send your paperwork and payment to:

      Florida Department of State

      Division of Corporations

      P.O. Box 6327

      Tallahassee, FL 32314

Allow three to seven days for processing of mailed documents.

Electronically filed documents are processed immediately. You will pay fees under this method using a debit or credit card.
