How to Bring Your Own VoIP Device

How to Bring Your Own VoIP Device thumbnail
VoIP devices often look like cell phones. Telling them apart at a glance is impossible.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, devices extend far beyond headsets. In fact, at first glance you may not be able to tell a VoIP phone from a cell phone. Sometimes, a VoIP provider will even let you choose your own device. Before you buy one for your VoIP service, however, make sure you know the steps to take.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a provider that allows you to bring your own VoIP device. Not all providers do. You can find out if a provider offers this service by browsing its website. If in doubt, call customer service. Never assume the service provider allows you to bring your own device.

    • 2

Pick out a device that is compatible with the service provider you chose. Even if the provider allows you to bring your own device, it may not accept all devices. You can usually either buy the device you want from the VoIP provider or find a list of acceptable devices on the provider's website.

    • 3

Connect your device with your VoIP service. You will find specific instructions on your provider's website about how to do this. You will typically need to download software from the provider's website that will connect with the help you set up your phone options. The phone will connect with the software through your wireless connection. If you can't find the instructions or run into trouble, call your VoIP provider's customer service line. A representative will walk you through how to connect it.
