How to Turn off an SSID

With any wireless Internet connection, network security is a top priority. One simple method to provide security is to turn off the broadcast of the Service Set Identifier (SSID). This is the name of the wireless network that is visible to anyone searching for a wireless connection. Turning off the SSID will make the wireless network invisible, thus increasing security.

Instructions

1. Turn on the computer, wireless router and modem.

2. Open a Web browser. In the wireless router user guide, there will be a URL for the router's configuration and setup. This URL will vary depending on the brand of router owned. Type the brand-specific URL into the web browser.

3. Type in the user name and password. If the username and password have not been changed to a personal creation, the original username and password will be found in the router's user guide.

4. Click the link or tab, depending on the brand of router owned, that will allow changes to be made to the routers settings.

5. Click the box next to "Broadcast SSID" to turn off SSID broadcasting. Click the "Apply" button to save the changes.
