How to Roast Chestnuts at Home
Roasted chestnuts are a traditional part of many holiday celebrations. Street vendors often roast the brown nuts, sung about in Christmas songs, over a fire. You can easily roast your own chestnuts without the need for a fireplace or fire pit. Slice a small "X" in the top of each chestnut. This prevents the nutshell from exploding in the oven.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lay the chestnuts in a single layer in your baking pan.

Roast the chestnuts in your oven for 30 minutes. When the chestnuts are ready, the cut shells will peel back a bit and the nuts will feel tender to the touch.

Remove the chestnuts from the oven and allow them to cool for five to 10 minutes before serving.

Tips & Warnings
Peel off the brown nutshell and white skin from the nuts before eating.
Add chestnuts to salad, stuffing or fruit salad mixtures.
Chestnut shells that aren't cut or pierced before roasting will pop in the oven, similar to popcorn kernels, causing a loud noise.
