How to Prevent Aluminum Hull Corrosion

How to Prevent Aluminum Hull Corrosion thumbnail
Protect your aluminum hull from corrosion.

Boats with aluminum hulls -- like those with steel hulls -- are susceptible to corrosion. If not protected, the hull could weaken over time, developing holes and cracks. Fortunately, if an aluminum hull is properly protected, it should remain a strong and low-maintenance part of your boat for a very long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off the aluminum hull of the ship, using a cloth and a strong degreasing soap. Wipe all grease, oil and grime from the hull, and then rinse with water. Dry off the hull with a towel.

    • 2

Rough up the surface of the hull using a sandblaster. This will create tiny scratches that will help the paint form a stronger bond with the metal. Move the sandblaster back and forth in a sweeping motion to cover every part of the hull.

    • 3

Brush on the epoxy paint using a paintbrush. Paint the entire surface of the hull. Be sure to also paint over any crevices where corrosion could develop. Allow the paint to dry completely, then apply a second coat.
