How to Test an Infrared Port

How to Test an Infrared Port thumbnail
Testing a device's infrared port involves use of the remote control.

Infrared ports are found on many consumer electronic devices. On occasion, a component might respond intermittently to remote commands, possibly affected by bright sunlight or florescent overhead lighting. During the troubleshooting process, it is prudent to test the actual infrared port on the device itself, potentially ruling out the device's port as the source of the intermittent operations.

Instructions

    • 1

Place fresh batteries in the device's remote control.

    • 2

Reduce ambient lighting so that there is still sufficient light to see what you're doing, but so that there is little chance that is is interfering with the IR port on the device.

    • 3

Remove any obstructions between the remote and the device.

    • 4

Stand no more than 3 to 4 feet from the device. Aim the device's remote directly at the IR port on the unit, usually found directly behind a plastic display window on the front of the device.

    • 5

Press the "Power" button on the device's remote control. Examine the device's behavior. Press additional buttons on the remote, waiting a few seconds between to allow the unit to respond. If the unit fails to respond, the IR port or remote control might require replacement.
