1
Purchase leather dye that is appropriate for the type of leather you have. Some leather dyes are for smooth leather, while others are for rougher pieces. There are also leather dyes that are specified for product types, such as upholstery, shoes and belts and furniture.
-
2
Choose the shade of blue that you want. Create dye samples to see how the color will turn out as this can differ from the color on the bottle.
-
-
3
In a medium-sized bowl, create a mixture consisting of one pint of water and one ounce of leather bleach. Wipe your leather with a soft cloth.
-
4
Apply the bleach solution onto the leather with a soft bristle brush. Allow to dry.
-
5
Redampen the leather with a wet sponge.
-
6
Read the directions on the leather dye. Some dyes must be mixed with water to create a solution, but others are ready straight from the bottle. To mix your dye, stir it with a spoon in a medium-sized bowl.
-
7
Dip a sponge into the blue dye. Apply the dye to the leather in even strokes across the surface. Apply one coat at a time until you achieve the color intensity you wish. Each coat may need to dry for one to two hours. If you find that after one layer dries you have blotchy spots or uneven streaks, you can brush dye back over the lighter spots so that the color is evenly matched. When dyeing leather, it may be best to do so on a giant plastic tarp to prevent a mess.
-
8
Flex the leather while drying. This will prevent it from stiffening and cracking.
-
9
Buff your leather with a soft cloth after it has dried.
-
10
Apply leather finish. Spray it evenly over the entire surface of the leather that has been dyed.
