Is your water as pure as possible? Check your filtration system to make sure you and your family are getting the full benefits from your investment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Filters
  • Clear Drinking Glasses
  • Water Purifiers
  1. Step 1

Run some tap water into a clear glass and look closely at it in good lighting. Is it clear or discolored? Do you see sediments in the water?

  2. Step 2

Smell the water. A faint smell of chlorine (like a swimming pool) is to be expected if you are on a city water supply, but any other smell ' particularly that of rotten eggs ' indicates that you should change your filter cartridges.

  3. Step 3

Ask if any of your family members have had unexplained health problems, especially if more than one member complains of the same symptoms. Diarrhea, stomach cramps, and other gastrointestinal complaints may indicate bacteria or other microorganisms in the water.

  4. Step 4

Taste it. Is it salty or unpleasant tasting?

  5. Step 5

Check places such as drains, fixtures, and porcelain items such as toilets and tubs. Do you see red, green, blue, or brown staining?

  6. Step 6

Call the company you bought your filter from. Some companies will come to your home and test your system for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If a water test revealed a need for a filtration system, be sure read all instructions and monitor the system carefully.
  • Replace your filter cartridges on schedule - usually every 6 months. See your owner's manual for recommendations for your specific model.
  • Remember that owners of private wells are solely responsible for their water quality. Test your water frequently.
