How to Drain the Radiator in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

by Kyle Sanstrom

The radiator in a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am is designed to extract heat from the vehicle's antifreeze. As a secondary function, it also cools the automatic transmission fluid. The radiator contains a drain valve that is built into its lower right corner. The radiator must be drained before attempting any type of radiator or cooling system repairs. Replacement engine coolant to refill the radiator is available from auto parts and hardware stores.

Step 1

Turn off the vehicle's engine and shift the transmission into park. Apply the emergency brake and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a battery terminal wrench.

Step 2

Crawl underneath the front of the vehicle and locate the drain valve. It is on the lower right side of the radiator. Place a drain pan underneath the valve.

Step 3

Turn the valve 90 degrees counterclockwise using the 1/4-inch ratchet. Allow the fluid to flow out of the radiator.

Step 4

Close the valve by rotating it 90 degrees clockwise with the 1/4-inch ratchet once the flow of fluid stops.
