Computer networks are made up of physical cables that interconnect the various nodes and computer systems in the network, enabling the devices to communicate with one another. Paladin Tools manufactures the DataShark line of network tools, specifically the RJ-45 tester kit, to diagnose and test these vast computer networks to resolve any physical connectivity issues that may arise.
Step 1
Plug the terminator into one end of the patch cable, or into the wall-jack end of the cable run you want to test.

Plug the hand-held unit into the other end of the cable, or into the patch panel in the wiring closet, if you are testing a cable run.
Step 3
Turn the device on. The circle of lights on the front represent the four pairs of wire that makes up the network cable; each light should blink in sequence. When one of the LEDs lights up, that means the wire it is testing is properly wired and intact. If there are missing lights, you have a bad cable or run on the indicated wire.
Step 4
Re-crimp or terminate the cable if it is bad, and retest to see if that fixed the problem. If not, you may need to re-run the cable or throw it away.
