A S-Video connector has four small pins.

Laptop computers are highly convenient due to their portable nature. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to use your laptop to project an image for several people simultaneously, the small screen can quickly become a drawback. For this reason, the Compaq Presario 2100 laptop has two ports allowing the computer to be connected to an external display. Using either of these ports and the appropriate video cable, you can attach your Presario 2100 to a television or monitor, allowing others to see your computer's display at work and potentially reducing eyestrain at home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Presario 2100 with the back facing you. If you are connecting the computer to your television or monitor with an S-Video cable, connect the cable to the round port on the left side of the computer. If you are using a VGA cable, connect the cable to the trapezoidal port on the right side.

    • 2

Connect the other end of the S-Video or VGA cable to the matching port on the back of the television.

    • 3

Turn the television and computer on. The computer should detect the presence of an external display and begin showing video on the television or monitor automatically.

    • 4

Press the "Fn" and "F5" keys on the keyboard simultaneously to switch to the television or monitor if the Presario 2100 does not display video on the external display automatically. Press the two keys again to switch back to the laptop's display, and press the two keys a third time to display video on the laptop's display and the external display simultaneously.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to adjust the settings on your TV to use it as a computer monitor.

  • Make sure that you know what types of video input ports are available on your television before buying a cable to connect it to your Compaq Presario 2100. A VGA port offers higher video quality than an S-Video port. However, many televisions do not have VGA ports. Most recently manufactured televisions have S-Video ports.
