Directions for the Installation of a Slave Cylinder in a 1993 S-10
The 1993 Chevrolet S-10 uses a hydraulic system to engage and disengage the clutch on a manual transmission. The system utilizes a master cylinder mounted on the firewall connected to the clutch pedal, which is similar to the brake master cylinder. When the clutch pedal is depressed, hydraulic fluid is transferred from the master cylinder to a slave cylinder mounted on the transmission bell housing and disengages the clutch. When a slave cylinder wears out it will prevent the clutch from fully disengaging and can make shifting difficult.
Things You'll Need
- Jack
- Jack stands
- Plastic hydraulic line caps
- Wrench set
- DOT 3 brake fluid
- Assistant
- Brake bleeder kit
Instructions

1
Park the S-10 on a flat paved surface and set the parking brake. Raise the front of the S-10 with a jack and support with jack stands.
-
2
Find the slave cylinder, mounted to the rear of the bell housing on the driver's side of the S-10. Use a wrench to remove the hydraulic line from the slave cylinder. Immediately cover the end of the line with a plastic hydraulic line cap.

-
3
Use a wrench to remove the two nuts that hold the slave cylinder onto the bell housing. Remove the slave cylinder and push rod from the bell housing.
-
4
Mount the new slave cylinder onto the bell housing and install the nuts. Tighten the nuts. Note that the new slave cylinder comes with a new push rod. Remove the cap from the end of the hydraulic line and thread the hydraulic line into the slave cylinder. Be careful not to cross thread the line into the slave cylinder. Use a wrench to tighten the hydraulic line.
-
5
Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Make sure the cylinder is full. If not, top off with fresh brake fluid.
-
6
Fill the bottle from the break bleeder kit one-third full with brake fluid. Put the hose and lid on the bottle and make sure the end of the hose is submerged in the brake fluid. Use a wrench to open the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder, then close it. Do not tighten the bleeder screw. Attach the other end of the bleeder hose to the bleeder screw.
-
7
Have an assistant push the clutch pedal down several times and then hold it down. While the assistant holds the pedal down, open the bleeder screw. Air and fluid will be pushed into the bottle. Close the bleeder screw. Tell your assistant to let up on the pedal. Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Make sure the master cylinder stays full. Repeat the bleeding process until no air exits the slave cylinder, only fluid. Close and tighten the bleeder screw. Remove the bleeder hose.

8
Raise the S-10, remove the jack stands and lower it to the ground. Make sure the master cylinder is full.
