How to Dump a Flat Bed Truck

How to Dump a Flat Bed Truck thumbnail
Flatbed trucks are an alternative to typical dump trucks.

In the construction and transportation industry, flatbed dump trucks are commonly used to transport all types of loads including large debris, logs, rocks, or even project waste. Often referred to simply as flatbed trucks, these vehicles are equipped with a long, uncovered bed that operates with a hydraulic system. Flatbed dumps are much easier to drive than over-sized dump trucks, and are legal for operation on normal roads and highways. Using a flatbed to dump construction materials or waste requires proper training and adherence to safety procedures.

Instructions

    • 1

Load materials that are going to be dumped onto the bed of the truck. For large materials such as rocks and logs, cover and fasten to the flatbed using straps and tarps.

    • 2

Secure the load before transporting. Check that straps and tarps are fastened tightly. Keep the load centered to prevent movement during transportation.

    • 3

Drive truck to the dump site. Remove any straps or tarps and approach the area in reverse.

    • 4

Park the truck on a level area. If you must park on an uneven surface, place chocks behind rear tires to prevent the truck from rolling back. Push the hydraulic button to raise the platform to a 45-degree angle, allowing items to dump off. If any material is still on the platform, continue to raise until it falls off. Lower the platform by pushing the hydraulic button until the flatbed is level.

    • 5

Remove chocks from the rear tires and return to the work site. Repeat steps 1-4 as needed to complete the entire project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not drive a flat bed truck unless you are a certified driver.

  • Do not drive in reverse if alarm signals are not functioning properly.

  • Be extremely careful dumping on an uneven surface. Too much of an incline can cause the truck to tip over.
