How to Replace the Third Seat in a 1998 Ford Expedition

The 1998 Ford Expedition's third-row seat is easy to remove and replace. Ford designed it this way so operators can remove the seat to store additional cargo when the seat is not needed. You may also need to replace a damaged third-row seat, or perhaps you simply need to replace the third-row seat after removing it for storage. Have an assistant help you with this task, since the seat is very heavy.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Old Third-Row Seat

    • 1

Open the Expedition's rear hatch. Inspect the right side of the cargo floor to find the anchor mount for the seatbelt. Insert your key into the plastic anchor mount cover. Turn it clockwise to release the plastic cover. Pull the cover off.

    • 2

Push the anchor release button to unhook the seatbelt from the anchor. The seatbelt should slide away from the anchor. Move it out of the way. Push the edge of the anchor down to fold it.

    • 3

Pull the folding lever on the passenger's side of the third-row seat. While pulling the lever, push the seatback forward. This folds the third-row seat.

    • 4

Inspect the center area beneath the third-row seat. You'll see a large release bar. Pull the bar upward while simultaneously lifting the third-row seat. Pull the third-row seat away from its anchors and out of the vehicle.

    Installing the New Third-Row Seat

    • 5

Push the release lever on the right side of the new third-row seat. Push down the seatback to fold the seat. This makes it easier to install.

    • 6

Lift the seat into the cargo area. Place it on top of the anchors. Push the release bar upward to latch the seat onto the seat anchors.

    • 7

Pull the release lever on the right side of the seat and lift the seatback to its normal position.

    • 8

Lift the seatbelt anchor upward to have it ready for the seatbelt plug. Plug the seatbelt into the anchor. Replace the cover. Use your key to lock the cover.
