You can make your own tornado out of two bottles connected together.

If you have a science project that requires you demonstrate a vortex or tornado, the best way to do it is to create your own. Unless you have magical powers that allow you to conjure up a full sized tornado, you can create a mini one inside two bottles filled with water.

Things You'll Need

  • Two empty two-liter plastic soda bottles
  • 1-inch metal washer, 3/8-inch diameter
  • Electrical or duct tape
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Food coloring
  • Tornado Tube plastic connector

Instructions

    • 1

Fill one bottle half way with water and add three drops of dish detergent. For effect you can also add some blue food coloring.

    • 2

Place a metal washer between the mouths of the two bottles and tape the bottles together around the washer with electrical or duct tape. Make sure there is a tight seal.

    • 3

Invert the bottle and verify there are no leaks as the water drains into the bottle on the bottom. To initiate the vortex or tornado, quickly maneuver the bottle in a clockwise manner as it drains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a Tornado Tube connector instead of the washer and tape.
