How to Remove the Airbag on Vehicles

The airbag on the steering wheel of a Vehicles is part of the steering wheel assembly that sits in the center of the steering wheel. The airbag is attached to a fuse in the fuse box that must be disconnected in order to remove the airbag from the Vehicles safely. Removing the steering wheel airbag from the Vehicles is a job that you can do in about an hour.

 How to Remove the Airbag on a Dodge Truck

Pop the hood and disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench. Allow the truck to sit for at least 20 minutes before you work on the airbag.

Reach behind the steering wheel and locate the two screws that hold the airbag to the steering wheel. Unscrew those screws using the torx-head screwdriver, which will allow the airbag to fall forward from the steering wheel.

Unplug the horn switch connector wire and the airbag connector with your hands, then hold the airbag with the vinyl face pointing up and carefully place it in a safe spot, away from any potential energy source.

 How to Remove an Airbag on a 1998 Chevy K-1500

Pop the hood and use an open-end wrench to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Allow the truck to sit for 30 minutes before moving on to Step 2.

Place your key in the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Turn the steering wheel to the left, 90 degrees from center. Look behind the wheel and locate the small hole in the back of the steering wheel. Place the flathead screwdriver into the hole and push it until the one side of the airbag pops out of the steering wheel.

Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees to the left so that the other side of the steering wheel is at the top. Place the flathead screwdriver into the hole on the right side, then push it in to pop out the airbag.

Pull the airbag out of the steering wheel. Unplug the wiring harness from the back of the airbag using your hands. Carefully carry the airbag out of the truck and place it face up on a wooden surface.

 How to Remove an Airbag From a Chrysler

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the Chrysler's battery post with an open-end wrench to discharge current from the airbag before attempting to remove it. Wait about 30 minutes before removing the airbag.

Pull off the cover on the fuse box underneath the dashboard, between the steering column and the driver's side door. Remove the fuse for the steering wheel airbag in the fuse box with a fuse puller. The fuse box cover has a diagram of where to find the fuse for the airbag.

Remove the screws on the steering column cover underneath the column with a screwdriver and set the cover out of the way. Disconnect the green plastic safety catch on the inside of the column and remove the yellow plastic circuit switch from the connector post inside the steering column.

Loosen the four Torx screws on the backside of the steering wheel with a Torx bit and socket wrench. Take the Torx screws off the back of the steering wheel and remove the steering wheel /airbag assembly in the center of the steering wheel just enough to see the electrical wire connections on the back of the assembly.

Detach the electrical wiring connections on the back of the steering wheel assembly and remove the assembly from the Chrysler's interior compartment.

 How to Remove the Airbag From a Chevy Pickup

Pop the hood and disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench. Allow the battery to sit disconnected for at least 15 minutes before proceeding, as you want to let the charging system discharge.

Place the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. The vehicle should not turn on, but you should be able to turn the steering wheel freely. Turn the wheel so that the top is at the 9 o'clock position.

Feel around the back of the steering wheel to locate two holes on either side. Place the flathead screwdriver in one of the holes and push it forward to pop the airbag out on one side.

Hold the freed side in place with one hand, and then push in the other hole . The airbag should pop out of the steering wheel.

Pull the airbag off of the wheel and unplug the airbag from the steering wheel. To store the airbag, make sure that the face of the airbag points up in the air. Otherwise the airbag could become a projectile if accidentally activated.
