How to Replace a 1997 Toyota Corolla Tail Light

The tail light on the 1997 Toyota Corolla is contained within the tail lamp assembly along with the rear turn signal light and the backup light. Replacing these lights requires the removal of the tail light assembly from the vehicle. The tail light uses a 3157-type bulb. In order to access the tail light bulb, you will need to use a screwdriver and you will need a pair of gloves so as to not damage the tail light bulb.

Things You'll Need

• Clean gloves
• Phillips head screwdriver
• Replacement 3157-type bulb

Instructions

1. Turn the Corolla's engine off and open the trunk.

2. Pull the carper out of the trunk. Remove the plastic surrounding the lower edge of the trunk to reveal the tail light screws.

3. Remove the two tail light screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.

4. Reach behind the assembly and unplug its electric connector. Pull the tail light assembly out of the vehicle. It may be stuck, so you may have to wiggle it slightly to remove it.

5. Rotate the middle bulb counterclockwise to remove it from the assembly. Install the new bulb by rotating it clockwise. Place the assembly back into the vehicle and reattach the electric connector.

6. Reinstall the two tail light screws. Reattach the plastic and the carpet. Close the trunk.
