How to Remove the Alternator From a 1991 Honda Civic

The electrical system in your 1991 Honda Civic does not employ perpetual motion. It is a closed system that regenerates itself through the use of an alternator that is driven by the motor. A drive belt spins on a pulley powered by the engine. The belt winds through a series of pulleys that drive different parts of the vehicle, including the alternator. The electrical system fades when the alternator dies as the car is powered by the finite energy of the battery. When the battery is used up the Civic will break down.

Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and place it aside where it will not contact with the battery. You do not want spark when handling the alternator.

Clear the way by removing the air intake hose and air filter case from the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the large through bolt. It is located underneath the alternator and attaches the component to the engine block. It is a large bolt with a nut exposed to the front of the car.

Locate the adjusting bolt on the alternator. It is installed into an adjusting plate that is attached to the engine above the alternator. Remove the bolt.

    • 5

Work the alternator free from its belt and the engine.
