How to Get a Job As a Blog Writer

How to Get a Job As a Blog Writer thumbnail
Blogging is a new specialty in the professional writing field.

Blogging has opened up a whole new world of employment opportunities for writers. Most businesses and government agencies now realize that people connect primarily via the Internet and their best bet for reaching customers or constituencies is with web content. Because the field is still relatively new, this is a great time to jump into an emerging medium. But plum blogging jobs require professional writing experience; blogging experience; and knowledge of social media and Internet writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your own blog. To convince someone you're a competent blogger, start your own blog by signing on with one of the blogging sites such as Blogger or Salon (see Resources). Pick a blog topic such as travel or budgeting. Establish an account with the blog site, including contact information such as an email address. Choose the design style for your blog. Pick additional options, such as hit counters. Start blogging.

    • 2

Market your blog on Facebook, Twitter and the Blog Catalog, and encourage people to follow your blog. The more followers you have, the more likely someone will pay you to write their blog.

    • 3

Look for blogging jobs on sites like Blogging Pro, GT Thread and Jobs.ProBlogger (see Resources). These include jobs such as personal finance blogger, fashion blogger and trucking blogger. Some of these have an online application, others want an email with copies of your work, a bio or résumé. Apply for blogs you have background in. People without kids should not apply to write parenting blogs, for example.

Emphasize any experience you have with print media, social networking and search engine optimization. If you are weak in social networking and search engine optimization, read up on it. These will be important skills to landing a blogging job.
