Keep your fence in good condition by cleaning it once a year.

Painted and stained fences need to be cleaned to remove mold, mildew and dirt. If you do not clean your fence, it can become stained permanently due to the buildup. Instead of buying a cleaner at a home improvement store, you can make your own at home with items that you already have. Making your own fence cleaner will save you money and is an effective way to keep your fence in good condition.

Step 1

Rinse the wood fence off with a power washer. The power washer will effectively remove any loose dirt and debris from the fence. Spray the fence from the top to the bottom and work your way around the fence. Keep the tip at least 18 inches away from the wood.

Step 2

Pour 2 gallons of warm water in a 5-gallon bucket. Add 1 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of liquid dish soap to the bucket. The white vinegar will kill the mold and mildew, and soap will clean the dirt and debris off the fence.

Soak a sponge in the solution. Wipe the fence off with the sponge from the top to the bottom.

Step 4

Rinse the solution off the fence with a garden hose after you clean a small section of the fence. Continue to clean the fence with the solution, and replace the cleaning solution when the water appears dark in color.
