How to Replace a Drum Stud in the Hub of a 1999 Toyota Corolla

A thread on a drum stud, while installing a lug nut, can become damaged easily by cross-threading. A drum stud with damaged threads won't be able to accept a lug stud used to hold the wheel in place. Rather than forcing the lug nut on the stud, most backyard mechanics can change the single drum stud without replacing the entire wheel hub. The studs can be purchased individually from most auto part stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the rear of the vehicle with an automotive jack, lifting the vehicle from the center of the axle. Slide jack stands under the frame rail on each side of the vehicle for extra support.

    • 2

Remove the lug nuts with a socket wrench. Slide the wheel from the studs and remove it.

    • 3

Pull the front of the brake drum from the wheel hub and brake drum assembly. Place a lug nut onto the drum stud being replaced. Tighten the lug nut so the end of the lug nut is even with the end of the stud.

    • 4

Place a press tool onto the wheel hub flange and drum stud. The flat end of the press tool should be placed on the rear of the wheel hub flange. The end of the bolt should be placed on the end of the lug nut stud.

    • 5

Turn the end of the bolt on the press tool to draw the stud from the wheel hub flange. Unscrew the bolt on the press tool to remove the tool, stud and attached lug nut.

    • 6

Insert the end of the replacement lug nut stud through the back of the wheel hub flange. Slide a flat washer over the replacement stud from the front, sliding it over the replacement stud until it is seated against the wheel hub flange.

    • 7

Place a lug nut onto the replacement drum stud. Tighten the lug nut with a socket wrench, which will draw the replacement drum stud into the wheel hub flange. Remove the lug nut with a socket wrench once the stud is seated into the flange. Remove the washer from the stud. Place the front of the brake drum over the wheel hub.

    • 8

Slide the wheel over the studs and install the lug nuts with a torque wrench. Tighten the lug nuts to 76 foot-pounds. Remove the jack stands from underneath the vehicle. Lower the vehicle with the automotive jack.
