How to Make a Word Magnet Board

How to Make a Word Magnet Board thumbnail
Word magnets are used to learn correct spelling.

Magnetic word boards let students and teachers change the order of words and add words. This is particularly useful when students are learning sentence structure, or when making word lists. A magnetic word board requires a magnetic bulletin board, which will allow the magnetic words to stick to the surface. You can personalize these boards with creative frames, or keep them plain.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the magnets into strips about 1/2-inch high and in various lengths, from 1/2-inch to 3 inches. These magnets will contain individual letters, letter combinations and words of different lengths.

    • 2

Write the letters of the alphabet on the smaller magnet pieces with the permanent marker. Write each letter at least once. Write the vowels at least two times each, because they are used more to form words.

    • 3

Write common words like "the" and the conjugated forms of the be verb on other strips. Also write common letter combinations such as "th" on some of the strips. Leave some of the strips blank to write new words and sentences during lessons.

    • 4

Make sure the surface of your magnetic board is clean and dry.

    • 5

Begin your lesson. Place the magnets on the board and adjust the order of the letters and words as you need. Keep a container near the board for magnets not in use, as well as the permanent marker to write on blank strips as you go. Be careful not to write directly on the board!
