How to Repair Handles on Antique Stoneware Whiskey Jugs
Antique stoneware whiskey jugs are typically made with a thumb-hole handle that loops around the neck of the jug. The loop offered a convenient way for drinkers to carry their whiskey jugs, but it is also one of the weak spots on a stoneware piece and susceptible to damage. Fortunately, stoneware tends to break into large pieces rather than shatter into shards like glass. If the handle on your antique whiskey jug breaks off, there's a good chance it will do so in one piece. A strong adhesive can repair the handle. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Test fit the broken handle with the two points on the jug so when it's time to bond the adhesive, you'll know which direction to apply the handle for proper fit.
-
2
Set the jug in direct sunlight to ensure the surface of the break is dry.
-
-
3
Apply adhesive to the two points on the broken handle where it attaches to the jug. Strong adhesives expand as they dry, so use them sparingly. Covering the entire surface of the break is not necessary.
-
4
Fit the handle to the two points where it attaches to the whiskey jug, adjusting the handle as necessary so the contours of the break align with the jug. Press and hold by hand for 10 minutes to form a bond.
-
5
Set the jug in a safe location to allow the adhesive to cure and dry, typically 24 hours.
