How to Blend Video & Camtasia PIP thumbnail
PIP can be used with this type of instructional image.

Making video for instructional purposes is now within the reach of almost anyone. Camtasia Studio is a premier video capture and editing program which opens the door to creative possibilities. However the program has so many capabilities that it can be overwhelming to the neophyte. Picture-in-Picture (PIP) is a technique that allows the insertion of a smaller video over the principal one. It's used mainly in instructional videos to show the speaker while a slide show is playing.

Instructions

  1. Setting up the PIP

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Camtasia" and under the "File" menu click "Import Media." Double click on the primary video you wish to use. This will move the video to the clip bin.

    • 2

Click "Show Timeline," if it's visible at the lower portion of the screen. Drag the video from the clip bin to the timeline. This will populate the video and audio tracks.

    • 3

Click on "Import Media" and then double click on the secondary video you wish to use for the PIP. This will move the video clip to the clip bin.

    • 4

Click on the "Tracks" drop down menu and click "PIP Track." The PIP track will appear in the timeline.

    • 5

Click and drag the secondary clip to the PIP track.

    • 6

Click on the PIP clip and drag to adjust its position on the timeline.

    Modify the PIP

    • 7

Double click the PIP to open the "Modify the PIP" page.

    • 8

Click to place a check mark next to the "Fade" option to have the PIP fade in and out smoothly.

    • 9

Use the opacity slider to adjust the visibility of the PIP clip.

    • 10

Click "Show/Hide PIP Video" to hide the PIP while keeping the audio playing, if you are in "Embed" mode and the PIP is obscuring an important part of the primary video.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only WMV, MOV, AVI videos as well as most graphic files can be used as PIP clips. Click on the "View" menu and click on "Toggle PIP Preview Placement" to go from "Embedded mode" to "Side by side mode" at any time. When using side-by-side mode, a number of "Modify" options are unavailable such as "Opacity" and the "color border" options, but the "Fade" and "Show/hide" options are still there.
