Volkswagen New Beetle & Child Seat Installation

Keeping children safe through proper installation of a carseat is a necessity in any car.

Installing a child car seat is one of the most important things a parent must do in order to keep their child safe in a car. State laws require small children to ride in child safety seats. The New Beetle, like all newer vehicles, is designed to accept safety seats to comply with these laws.

Instructions

    • 1

Check that the seat can be placed level in the back of the New Beetle. All car seats have a level indicator. If you cannot get the seat level, you will need to find a new carseat for your Beetle. A car seat also should not touch the back of the front seat when rear-facing. Doing so increases the force of impact in a crash.

Evaluate if your child will be rear-facing or forward-facing. It is the law in most states that a child must remain rear-facing until the age of 1 year and at least a weight of 20 pounds. There are many children who exceed 20 pounds before 1 year and many that weigh 20 pounds well after their first birthday. The child must meet both requirements in order to turn the carseat around. Parents are now encouraged to keep children rear-facing until they are at least two years old.

Use the latch system to install the carseat if possible. Like most new cars, the Volkswagen New Beetle offers the latch system, which allows you to more securely fasten a carseat into the car. You should never use both the seatbelt and the latch system. Only use one or the other. When the carseat is rear-facing, you must use the lower latch anchors located in the crease of the seat, near the seatbelt latches. Forward-facing seats use the top tethers and the lower anchors to secure the seat.
