How to Build a USB to Serial Converter

The universal serial bus (USB) is now the industry standard for connecting peripherals to a computer. The USB has gone through a few alterations since it was first introduced as the replacement to the original serial connection port. More and more computer manufacturers are now avoiding the serial port as it is big and bulky compared to the USB. You can, however, still use your serial devices on your computer, but an adapter is needed along with a few other cables. Once you have the hardware, building the converter is very simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the serial to USB adapter on a flat surface, and locate both connection points. The USB has a single connection opening, while the serial has a 15 pin connection opening.

    • 2

Insert the USB cable's male end into the adapter's female USB connection port. Some adapters come with a lock to make sure the USB cable does not disconnect if pulled by accident. Fold the lock over to lock it into place.

    • 3

Insert the male serial connection cable into the adapter's female serial port. Twist the connection locks into place to make sure the serial cable does not disconnect. The converter is now built.

    • 4

Plug the other end of the serial cable into the device, and the other end of the USB cable into your computer's USB port. Turn the device on and your computer will recognize it.
