How to Install a 1985 Camaro Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the 1985 Chevy Camaro is located inside the gas tank. When the fuel pump stops working, the car might begin to spit and sputter, or stop altogether. You don't need to take your car to a professional auto technician to replace the fuel pump. You can take care of the problem in your garage or driveway. The job should take about two hours if you have some basic auto-repair skills.

Pop the hood on the Camaro and disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench to loosen the terminal nut. Relieve the pressure on the gas tank by removing the gas cap. Disconnect the fuel line from the gas tank with a wrench. Drain the fuel into the drain pan.

Place the wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Raise the rear of the Camaro with the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the vehicle near the jacking point and raise it to the frame. Remove the nuts from the gas tank straps using a socket and ratchet. Carefully lower the gas tank from the vehicle.

Remove the sending unit from the gas tank using the sending unit tool to loosen the retaining cam. Remove the O-rings and discard them. Disconnect the fuel pump from the sending unit using a wrench.

Attach the new fuel pump to the sending unit and tighten it up. Insert the sending unit into the fuel tank. Install new O-rings, then lock the cam into place with the tool. Raise the gas tank back into place on the car and tighten the straps using the socket and ratchet.

Remove the jack stand from under the Camaro and lower the vehicle to the ground. Pour the gasoline back into the gas tank and install the fuel cap. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with the wrench. Start the car to test the fuel pump.
