Instructions

  1. Check Fuel Supply When Engine Will Not Start

    • 1

Check to ensure you have enough fuel in the fuel tank and that the fuel reaches the carburetor from the fuel tank.

    • 2

Make certain you have the ignition switch of your scooter in the "Run" position.

    • 3

Turn off the engine, loosen the carburetor drain screw underneath the carburetor, then drain the fuel into a container. Tighten the carburetor drain screw, turn on the engine, and then allow it to run for a few seconds. Turn off the engine, loosen the carburetor drain screw once again and look to see if the carburetor contains a full supply of fuel. If the carburetor does have fuel, you may have a problem with the ignition system. Dispose of the drained fuel properly, according to the oil recycling center in your area, making certain you have no sparks or flames around.

Check Ignition System When Engine Will Not Start

    • 4

Remove the spark plug by using a spark plug wrench. Locate the spark plug at the head of the engine, under the seat compartment. Reattach the spark plug to the spark plug lead, which shields the spark plug from electrical shorts.

    • 5

Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position, and then move the engine stop switch to the "Run" position.

    • 6

Push the gray-colored, "Start" electric button. You should see a blue spark jump across the gap of the spark plug; otherwise, you must take your scooter into the service center. Never perform this spark plug test if you wear a pacemaker or have a heart medical condition.

    Stalled Engine

    • 7

Check to make certain you have enough fuel in the fuel tank.

    • 8

Remove the spark plug and wipe it clean if necessary, using lint-free rags and coating the spark plug threads lightly with engine oil. Replace the spark plug if you need to with a CR7HSA (NGK), A7RTC (TORCH) spark plug with a gap of .7mm to .8mm or .028 inches to .032 inches.

    • 9

Check the idle speed of your Baja scooter. You should see an idle speed of 1400 to 1600 revolutions per minute (RPMs). Adjust the idle speed if necessary by warming up the engine, then shutting the engine off. Remove the battery from underneath the seat, and then remove four nuts and bolts using a wrench to remove the seat storage area. Find the idle adjustment screw on the carburetor, and then turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle or counterclockwise to decrease idle. Adjusting the idle too high can cause an accident as your scooter launches forward after starting the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Call Baja Motorsports at 888-863-2252 if you have questions regarding service or parts for your scooter. Baja Motorsports suggests you find online ATV or dirt bike shops for compatible parts since Baja carries only a limited stock.

  • Never use gasoline in your Baja scooter with over 10 percent ethanol or 5 percent methanol -- this gasoline type can damage the engine and parts of your scooter. Only use unleaded gasoline, preferably having an octane rating of 89 or over.
