How to Apply Ribbon to a Christmas Tree
Many different types of ribbon act as the finishing touches on decorated Christmas trees. Wide gauze ribbon is a popular choice, as are ribbons in metallic colors or rich velvety ribbons. When applying ribbon to a Christmas tree, the goal is for the ribbon to be visible and elegant without looking too pristine or too messy. The two major ways to apply ribbon to the tree are to wrap it around the tree in a spiral and to cascade a few pieces of ribbon straight down the tree. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
-
Spiral Wrap
-
1
Set up a step stool or chair so you can reach the top of the Christmas tree.
-
2
Stand on the step stool, and wrap one end of the piece of ribbon around the base of a branch at the top rear of the tree. Wired ribbon will hold if wrapped a few times around the branch, but you will have to tie or tape ribbon without wire to keep it in place.
-
-
3
Bring the ribbon around to the front of the tree, tucking it back a couple inches into the branches as you go.
-
4
Wrap the ribbon around the tree, moving downward in a spiral and leaving at least 18 inches vertically between the coils of ribbon. Continue tucking the ribbon into the tree a couple inches as you wrap it.
-
5
Twist the ribbon a half rotation occasionally to give it a more casual look.
Straight Cascade
-
6
Cut four or more pieces of ribbon long enough to descend from the top of the tree to the bottom or to the ground if you would like them to stretch that far.
-
7
Set up your step stool in front of the tree.
-
8
Tie or wrap all the pieces of ribbon around the trunk or bases of the branches near the top of the tree. Try to hide the anchor point(s), either under a tree topper or by putting it at the back of the tree or in a place hidden by branches.
-
9
Arrange the ribbons so they descend down the tree with approximately the same amount of space between each.
-
10
Tuck the ribbons back into the tree in places for a more casual look, or arrange them so they flow as close to straight down as possible for a more elegant and crisp look.

Tips & Warnings
Wired ribbon is often easier to work with than plain ribbon, because the wires allow you to more precisely guide where the ribbon goes.
