How to Test for a GED in West Virginia
The West Virginia Department of Education has developed a wide network of resources to help people earn General Education Development credentials, commonly called GEDs or high school equivalency diplomas. Like all other states, West Virginia requires GED candidates to pass five tests in reading, writing, social studies, science and math with a total score of 2,250 points and a minimum of 420 points on each test. However, the West Virginia GED program also has some state-specific requirements and procedures.

Find an Adult Basic Education Center and schedule a GED Official Practice Test or OPT. West Virginia requires GED candidates to take a screening test, similar to the GED test, to gauge whether they can pass or if they need more time to prepare. GED candidates must pass the OPT -- which is scored in the same way as the actual test -- with 2,250 points. GED candidates can take the test at one of many ABE centers throughout the state. To sign up for the official GED, applicants need an instructor to sign their West Virginia GED registration form to verify they successfully passed the OPT.

Check the special requirements for GED candidates who are 17 or 18 years old if applicable. GED applicants who are 18 must provide information on the West Virgina GED registration form that shows their original high school class has graduated. If that hasn't yet occurred, applicants must provide the date they withdrew from school and the school principal's signature. The same requirements apply to 17-year-old applicants, only they must also have a parent or guardian sign the West Virginia GED registration form as well.

Sign up at GEDWizard, West Virginia's online scheduling system. To schedule a test, applicants must first choose a test location and test time. GED testing centers are listed on the state Department of Education's GED web page and test times are included within each listing. An e-mail address is required to sign up on GEDWizard. Applicants must complete two sections on GEDWizard: My Application and My Account. When those two sections are complete, print out a GED Registration Ticket.

Contact the GED testing center to schedule a pretest appointment. GED candidates must bring their completed West Virginia GED registration form, GED Registration Ticket and a state-issued photo I.D. to the testing center about a week before the tests. While this requires two trips to the testing center, it also assures that applicants have all the necessary forms and signatures and prevents anyone from being turned away the day of the test.

Take the GED test. All candidates will need to bring a state-issued photo I.D. on the day of the test. GED candidates are not allowed to have anything with them during the test, so cell phones, purses, backpacks and anything valuable should be left at home. Approximately 48 hours after the test, candidates can sign on to GEDWizard, access their accounts and view their scores.
