Submit State of Michigan withholding taxes with form 160.

Businesses submit Michigan withholding taxes by reporting amounts owed on a periodic return and sending payment with the form. Michigan collects withholding and other business taxes through the Department of Treasury monthly or quarterly, depending on the amount of tax due. Businesses that have more employees will have larger amounts of tax due and are required to report and pay withholding taxes more frequently.

Instructions

    • 1

Register with the state for withholding tax. Before you can withhold mandatory state income tax from your employees, you must register with the state. Submit your application by mail or fax at:

      Department of Treasury

      Registration Section

      Treasury Building

      Lansing, MI 48922

      Fax: 517-636-4520

You can also complete the registration online at the state Department of Treasury website (see Resources).

    • 2

Complete the Department of Treasury Form 160 (see Resources). This is the combined tax form for Michigan withholding and sales tax. You must file even if you have zero tax due for the period.

    • 3

Make your check out to the State of Michigan and in the memo section, write your state account number and the period that the payment covers. Make a copy of your completed form and check for payment. If your payment is ever lost or misapplied by the state, you will need to prove what you intended to pay with your check. Similarly, if your return is ever lost or needs to be reproduced, you can reference your copy.

    • 4

Mail your form and payment. Mail your return by the 20th of the month. If you are a monthly filer, you must submit your withholding return and payment each month. If you are a quarterly filer, your returns and payments are due on the 20th of month following the end of a quarter. For example, the first quarter ends March 31. Your return and payment is due April 20th. Send these items to:

      Michigan Department of Treasury

      Lansing, MI 48922
