How to Figure Out Your Seasonal Coloring

How to Figure Out Your Seasonal Coloring thumbnail
It's simple to find out which colors look best on you.

Skin tones are separated into two categories: warm and cool. A color that may flatter a warm-toned person may completely wash out a cool-toned person. For example, someone with cool-toned skin can look washed out by gold tones. If you want to know what colors look best on you, you should first know what "season" you are. Warm-toned people fall into two subcategories: Spring and Autumn, and cool-toned people fall into two other categories: Winter and Summer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Stand in front of a mirror at a distance of roughly 2 feet away.

    • 2

Hold a piece of bright white computer paper just under your chin.

    • 3

Close your eyes, count to 10 and then open your eyes. If you notice the paper first, you're warm toned; skip to Step 4. If you notice your face first, you're cool toned; skip to Step 5.

Look at your (natural) hair. If your hair is light blonde, strawberry blonde, light auburn, medium or golden brown, your season coloring is Spring. If your hair is dark brown, dark red or black, your season coloring is Autumn.

Look at your (natural) hair. If your hair is light blonde to deep brown but lacks any red, auburn or golden tones, your season coloring is Summer. If your hair is medium brown, dark brown or black without any red, auburn or golden tones, your season coloring is Winter.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're having a difficult time figuring out whether you are cool or warm toned with a "paper test," take a look at your veins. If the veins in your arms appear green, you're warm toned. If the veins in your arms appear more blue, you're cool toned.
