Look on the display screen for clues to your problem. It could say things like "Tray Empty," "Toner Low" or "Standby."

If the Sharp copier/printer is not getting any power, check the cord and make sure it's plugged in all the way. Unplug your Z820 and plug in an appliance you know works, to ensure that the outlet isn't the problem. Plug the Z820 back in and turn the power switch on. If it's working, it might take a few minutes to reboot, so listen for fans.

    • 2

Make sure the side cover or top paper jam doors haven't come open. If you have a paper jam, Sharp advises unplugging the Z820, then opening the top door and then the side door, to check for paper scraps inside. Turn the exposed wheels with your fingertip to check behind each roller.

    • 3

After closing all the doors again, open te paper trays and make sure they have paper in them and that they are not overstuffed. Using non-standard paper can cause feeding problems, so make sure the paper is the right kind, that it's not bent where it feeds into the machine, and that it's not stapled.

    • 4

Study the Sharp Z820's error codes in the manual. The display could be alerting you to one of many problems.

    • 5

Check for an empty toner cartridge if the Z820 is operational but turning out poor quality copies. But first, inspect the copier glass and laser wand during a quick copy to make sure it's not broken or malfunctioning. Clean the glass if it's smudged. A problem with this mechanism could require a call to Sharp support (see Resources section). Adjust the copy contrast if the cartridge isn't empty.

    • 6

Attempt a reset. Sharp recommends unplugging the unit, removing any potential jams, then holding down "Start" and "Stop" at the same time. While still holding the keys, have a friend or co-worker plug the Z820 back in.
