Internal interviews are often viewed as being more difficult than a typical interview because of the first-hand knowledge the interviewer has about the applicant. Keep in mind that the person conducting the interview has likely spoken to the internal candidate’s supervisor or manager to gain insight about his work performance, so extra care should be taken in selecting your responses to ensure that they are painting an accurate picture of your qualifications and experience
Internal Interview Preparation Guidelines
Dress the way you would for a job interview with another company. For example, even if you typically dress business casual for work, you should select business professional attire for your interview.
Research the department and position. You may be an expert in your current role within the company, but what do you know about the position you are interviewing for? Gain a better understanding of the potential new role by reviewing the job description or speaking with colleagues in that department.
Respond to questions asked during an internal interview the same way you would during an interview with another company. Don’t assume that the individual conducting the interview is aware of all of the assets you can bring to the table.
Bring copies of any awards or recognition you have received. The interviewer will most likely not be aware of all of your previous achievements.
Ask questions that are relevant to the position you have applied for. This is your opportunity to find out any details that are unclear and to display your interest in the new role.
