How to Germinate Magnolia Tree Seeds

Magnolia trees are native to the southern United States, where they grow to heights of 20 to 90 feet depending on the variety. Trees produce large flowers 7 to 10 inches in diameter. Flowers have a waxy appearance and a sweet fragrance. Leaves of the magnolia tree are oval shaped with a leathery texture. Each September and October, seeds from the magnolia tree can be picked, prepared and germinated to produce another magnolia tree. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pick the magnolia seeds from a magnolia tree. Seed pods appear in September to early October. The pod is reddish-orange in color and oval shaped.

    • 2

Place the seed pod on a table in direct sunlight to dry out for up to three days. The pod will start to separate, exposing the orange seed inside. Shake the pod to release the seed.

    • 3

Fill a small jar with warm water and drop the seed into the water. Allow the seed to soak in the water for at least 12 hours. The orange shell will soften. Remove the seed from the water and rub the seed between your hands to rub off the orange shell to expose a dark seed. The dark seed is what you need to start a magnolia tree.

    • 4

Fill a 4-inch diameter pot with 1 part garden soil, 1 part sand and 1 part peat moss. Place the seed 1/4 inch deep in the soil and cover. Place the pot in a warm location with temperatures of 70 degrees Fahrenheit and indirect sunlight.

    • 5

Water the soil. Keep the soil moist until you see a sprout. Germination takes about two to six weeks. Keep soil moist, but not soggy.
