How Do I Build a 28 by 28 Cabin?
Log cabins can be constructed using a variety of different styles, techniques and materials. The 28 by 28-foot cabin is a standard size that is available in pre-fabricated kits. The cabin can also be built without the kit and customized to the builder's specifications. It is important to draw the plans in advance, and to suit local building building codes. In many areas, permits must also be obtained before the building begins. Some builders opt to use traditional hand tools instead of power tools, for a more traditional cabin-building experience. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure and mark the cabin perimeter. Excavate the area to create a level building pad.
-
2
Dig footers around the perimeter of the pad with a backhoe. The footers will be the width of the backhoe bucket. You can also dig cross sections to connect the perimeter but it is not required for small cabin construction. Install concrete forms for the foundation. Pour the concrete to create the foundation.

Measure and cut the logs. Leave an extra two feet on each log and cut the door side logs in half. When the logs are set, there will an extra foot extending from each end. Strip the bark off the logs for a traditional look. Set the perimeter logs on the foundation. Drill holes in the logs and set them directly on the foundation rebar.
-
4
Cut a saddle notch beginning one foot inside of each log. The saddle notch is a half circle cut that will sit on top of the alternate log. Alternately stack the logs as you would with Lincoln logs until the top log is set on each side of the perimeter.
-
5
Frame the roof with 2 by 4 rafters and 2 by 4 vertical supports. Adjust the pitch of the roof to a steep level for areas with heavy snowfall. Use a less aggressive pitch for dry climates. Cover the roof with pressure treated plywood and a water barrier. Cut out a hole for the stove pipe if applicable. Attach metal roofing to complete the roof.
-
6
Install the door and windows inside of any pre-planned framing. Install the plumbing and electricity if it is a part of the plan.
-
7
Apply a layer of chinking to the gaps in the logs. Chinking is a putty-style material that will seal the gaps between the logs.

Tips & Warnings
Stain the logs with a weatherproof material to prevent rotting and build a porch for additional comfort.
Hire a plumber and electrician if you do not have experience. It will save time and money in the long run.
