Smoke smell in your home from cigarettes or a fireplace can permeate the fibers of upholstery, carpet and clothing. Smoking outdoors and making sure your fireplace works properly can help avoid smoke odors in the home, but if the smell is there you can remove it with home remedies. Vinegar is a natural odor neutralizer and remover and can be used to rid your home of a smoke smell.

Step 1

Pour 2 cups white vinegar into a bucket and add a half-gallon of warm water. Dampen a clean cloth with the vinegar solution and use it to wash all hard surfaces, such as furniture, flooring and fireplace surfaces, to remove a smoke smell.

Wet a clean cloth with straight white vinegar. Wring out excess liquid then wave the cloth around the room to remove fresh smoke smell. The vinegar neutralizes and removes the odor.

Place a small bowl of vinegar in each room that has a heavy smoke smell. Leave the bowl there for one day to help get rid of the smell.

Step 4

Lay a piece of white bread in a bowl and pour enough white vinegar on the bread to wet it. Place the bowl with the vinegar bread in small spaces, such as closets, bathrooms or your car, to absorb and neutralize smoke smell. Discard the bread after one day.
