How to Restart a Dodge Sprinter

How to Restart a Dodge Sprinter thumbnail
Restart your Dodge Sprinter.

Every Dodge Sprinter has an ignition key already programmed by the dealership. Once programmed, this key will start your Sprinter engine and allow you to control the locking system. In order to prevent other people from buying an aftermarket copy of your car key and using it to start your car, Dodge uses an immobilizer for the ignition. When the wrong key is inserted and attempts to crank the engine, the immobilizer shuts down the fuel system and prevents the vehicle from starting. You can restart the Sprinter again if you have a programmed key.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the original key and insert it into the ignition.

    • 2

Turn the key clockwise as far as it will go until the engine cranks. If this doesn't work, remove the key from the ignition.

    • 3

Grab a programmed spare key and use it to crank the engine instead. It is possible that the original key has malfunctioned, and this can be tested by using an alternate key that is also programmed. If the secondary key does not work, either both keys have been deprogrammed or you have an error with the immobilizer system itself.

Tow the Sprinter to Dodge repair shop program and ask them to reprogram your key. If you buy a new key, you must take it to the shop to have it programmed. You can't do this yourself. Before spending money on a replacement key --- they can be costly --- see if the Dodge shop can just reprogram your original key and solve the problem.
