Learn How to Screen Print Multiple Colors
Even in these days of DTG (direct-to-garment) printers and easy-to-use heat presses, many people still prefer the more professional look of a t-shirt with screen printing. Screen printing is a process in which the printer places the various colors of the image on individual screens and applies them to the shirt. The process can be complex, especially if you use many colors. If you would like to learn how to do this, there are several approaches.

Join some of the sites that specialize in the topic of t-shirt printing, such as T-shirt Forums or You The Designer. These sites will have tips and tutorials addressing many aspects of the screen printing process. In addition, you will have the chance to ask questions in the forums, receiving answers from people who have years of experience.

Read books on screen printing. There are many to choose from. Some suggestions include "Print Liberation: The Screen Printing Primer" by Nick Paparone, Jamie Dillon and Luren Jenison, "Simple Screenprinting: Basic Techniques & Creative Projects" by Annie Stromquist, "Do It Yourself Screenprinting" by John Isaacson and "How to Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit" by Scott Fresener and Pat Fresener.

Sign up for courses in screen printing. Many community colleges offer courses in screen printing. This will give you hands-on training with the equipment without the initial outlay of actually buying the equipment.

Take a job with a screen printing shop. Some shops will hire untrained workers and teach them how to use the equipment. The advantage with this approach is that you learn the business side of screen printing.
