How to Write Cover Letters for Athletic Directors

How to Write Cover Letters for Athletic Directors thumbnail
Focus your cover letter on the future of the program when applying for an athletic director position.

Like the director himself, a cover letter for an athletic director position must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of sports, administrative capabilities and an eagerness to work and guide athletes. Your cover letter must also utilize a persuasive tone and strong writing, as the goal is to convince the principal or dean to read on and consider your resume. Because not all athletic director positions require exactly the same qualifications and duties, the job description of the position you want can serve as a guide as you choose what to say in your cover letter.

Instructions

    • 1

Write an introductory paragraph, explaining that you are applying for the school's athletic director position. Mention how you learned the job was available, calling attention to any references you have, if applicable. Include what level you are at in your career; for example, if you are currently an athletic director for another program, mention so in this paragraph. If you are not an athletic director, but have coaching experience, explain what your strongest skill is as an athletic instructor and why you believe that skill would make you an excellent director.

    • 2

Write the body of your cover letter, using the athletic director job description to find keywords and phrases. For example, if the first line under "duties" on the description is "foster strong relationship between school and community," you can assume this is particularly important. Mentioning any of your own community volunteer work, successful fundraisers you've organized or plans you've implemented to raise awareness in your town about your athletic program will show not only that you paid attention to the job description, but that you are indeed the best candidate.

Write a concluding paragraph and mention you would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the position. If you will be visiting the school for a tour or to attend a game or athletic event in the near future, mention so in this paragraph. Thank the principal or dean for his time and consideration.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you may include more general, transferable skills in your resume, such as the sports you specialize in and the various athletic administrative tasks you've attended to, the focus of the cover letter should not be on your own history. Rather, focus on your future as this school's athletic director, pointing out how your past experience qualifies you to lead the program.
